Therapeutic Drugs: DE-NOL

TRI-MED supplies DE-NOL, (Colloidal Bismuth Subcitrate) in compliance with the TGA's Special Access Scheme (SAS). When used in combination with Furazolidone, Tetracycline and Metronidazole in a 14-day treatment programme can assist with the eradication of a Helicobacter pylori infection or Helicobacter pylori infection associated with non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) via.

After ingestion of DE-NOL, the Bismuth derivatives formed in the acid environment of the stomach bind strongly to the proteins in ulcerated tissue to form a protective layer, (a matrix) which shields the ulcer from aggressive factors and allows it to heal. In addition DE-NOL brings about an increase in local prostaglandin levels, which stimulates the production of bicarbonate and mucin thereby also protecting the stomach lining.

In vitro and in vivo DE-NOL actively penetrates the cell wall of Helicobacter pylori, (the organism that causes gastritis and is closely associated with ulcer recurrence) causing the disintegration of the bacterium and eventual death. Healing of the underlying gastritis by eradication of Helicobacter pylori prevents ulcer relapse.

DE-NOL may be combined with Amoxicillin or Nitroimidazoles in order to improve eradication rates of Helicobacter pylori, while triple therapy employing DE-NOL, Tetracycline or Amoxicillin and Metronidazole has given the best results, recent studies have also shown that De-Nol and Furazolidone combinations with Amoxicillin and a proton pump inhibitor also gives greater than 92% cure rates.
