Therapeutic Drugs: Nitazoxanide

TRI-MED, supplies Nitazoxanide (NTZ) {Trade Name: Alinia ®} a novel broad spectrum anti-infective developed in the USA.

NTZ has been evaluated on a worldwide basis for treating a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal Helminth and protozoal (parasitic) infections, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis and Helicobacter pylori {NTZ is active against Helicobacter pylori in vitro. A double-blind clinical trial intended to evaluate the efficacy of NTZ against Blastocystis hominis is ongoing in Perth, WA under the direction of Prof. Barry Marshall).

The product is available in two pharmaceutical formulations for oral use:

  • A 500 mg film-coated tablet (the adult formulation) and
  • A powder for re-constitution as a 100 mg / 5ml paediatric suspension.

Both of the above are manufactured in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices in Belgium. The tablets and powder use standard pharmaceutical excipients.
