TRI-MED is involved in research, development and marketing of diagnostics and pharmaceutical drug products primarily related to the ulcer causing bacterium Helicobacter pylori.
Professor Barry Marshall, who with Professor Robin Warren was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in December 2005 for discovering the linkage between Helicobacter pylori and gastritis is TRI-MED's Medical Director and one of the founders of TRI-MED.
Professor Marshall's research has led to the development of "cutting edge" Medical Diagnostic Tests such as, the PYtest® (A Carbon Urea Breath Test) and the CLOtest® (the pioneer Rapid Urease Test) for the detection of Helicobacter pylori. Detection and treatment of Helicobacter pylori is recommended by the World Health Organisation's International Agency Research into Cancer (IARC) because long-term chronic infection with Helicobacter pylori has the potential to lead to serious consequences such as gastric cancer if left untreated.
Experienced gastroenterology professionals have designed all TRI-MED's diagnostic tests. Each of the diagnostic tests marketed by TRI-MED has unique aspects to them. This has led to them being the largest selling tests of their type in the world.
Therapeutic drug treatment regimes involving Colloidal Bismuth Substrate (Trade name De-Nol) and Furazolidone (Trade name Furasian) to cure multi-resistant Helicobacter pylori strains have also been developed by Professor Marshall. These are available from TRI-MED. In addition to these anti-Helicobacter pylori drugs for treatment of refractory Helicobacter pylori, TRI-MED are also the sole-agents in Australia for the novel drug Nitazoxanide, (Trade name Alinia) which is a broad spectrum anti-infective and the treatment of choice for the eradication of Cryptosporidium, Blastocystis, and Nitromidazole refractory Giardia, and Entamoeba infections. Nitazoxanide is also highly effective against all known Helminth-parasites known to infect the human gastrointestinal tract.
TRI-MED markets its products worldwide and has strategic alliances with multinational corporations such as Kimberly Clark Corporation and Romark Pharmaceuticals. TRI-MED has strong academic and intellectual property links with the University of Western Australia.
